2015年1月3日William and Mary’s Couplin awaits NFL fate
"At the end of the day, all you can do is take care of what you can control," the former William and Mary All America defensive back said. "Perform to the best of your abilities and let people know what kind of person you are and how hard you’re willing to work, and there’s no point in worrying about all the other stuff."
Couplin emerged as an intriguing prospect in recent months, heading into the annual NFL draft, which began a three day run Thursday in New York.
He is 6 foot 1 and 213 pounds, with a condor like 81 inch wingspan and measurables that compare favorably with players rated much higher on most draft boards.
Couplin, a native of Upper Marlboro, Md., had an outstanding Clay Matthews Jersey senior year for one of the best defenses in the Football Championship Subdivision. He was third in the CAA in tackles (113) and led all defensive backs, averaging 9.4 tackles per game.
After the season, he spent 2 1/2 months working out at Chip Smith Performance Systems in the Atlanta suburb of Norcross, Ga. A Chesapeake native with a soft spot for athletes from Virginia schools, Smith has trained approximately 1,300 NFL players over 25 years and has a client list of about 250 current players.
"I absolutely think he has the stuff," Smith said. "He’s a great athlete. He would have rated among the top one or two guys at his position if he were John Kuhn Womens Jersey at the (NFL) combine getting tested. He’s going to get a chance to play. Whether he’s drafted or not, nobody knows.
"There are only 320 guys who get invited to the combine and only 220 guys get drafted. It’s a tough row to hoe, but somebody’s going to take a chance on him, and when he gets in a camp, he’s going to be a hard guy to let www.packersnflofficial.com/Nike-Aaron-Rodgers-Jersey.html go, because of the kind of athlete and kind of person he is."
Couplin often worked six hours per day, five days a week at the facility. He spent a couple of hours with former NFL Pro Bowl defensive back Ray Buchanan on technique and ball skills, a couple of hours with Smith on speed and conditioning, a couple of hours lifting.
The work also included a lot of 7 on 7 field training, against fellow workout partners such as former South Carolina quarterback and draft hopeful Connor Shaw.
Couplin got sick at the end of last season and his weight dropped to 193 pounds. By the time he left Smith’s facility and Georgia, he had added more than 20 pounds of muscle, all while improving his speed, technique and workout test performances.
"The thing about Jerome is he did it all with such a great attitude," Smith said. "He was the ’giddyup and go.’ We had to be the ’whoa.’"
Couplin lowered his time in the 40 yard dash from the mid 4.5 second range into the mid 4.4s. He had a 43 inch vertical jump, a product of athletic ability as well as his wingspan. He logged a standing broad jump of 11 feet, 5 inches one inch shy of the facility record, held by one time All Pro cornerback Champ Bailey.
Couplin didn’t duplicate those numbers at William and Mary’s pro day, a cold, windy, miserable March morning, but did plenty to interest a handful of scouts. The Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions flew him to their facilities to interview, and he also worked out for the Chiefs, Colts and Baltimore Ravens.
One major knock on Couplin is the level of competition in FCS, versus the Football Bowl Subdivision. Scouting services rate him at various levels and view him as a late round pick or free agent.
ESPN draftnik Mel Kiper Jr., doesn’t list Couplin among his top 50 safeties available. 22 safety. 26 safety. TFY Draft Insider rates him the 53rd best safety available.
Evaluators praise Couplin’s physical play and sure tackling. They question John Kuhn Youth Jersey his ball skills and coverage ability.

Couplin tapered his workouts in recent weeks as the draft approached. The anticipation, he said, is equal parts exciting and nerve wracking.
"The excitement makes you nervous," he said. "I’m so excited Clay Matthews Kids Jersey to see how it goes. All the time I put in 4 1/2 years of college, high school, Boys’ Club. The foundation is there. It’s exciting to be in the position I am and just to have the opportunity to continue to play the game."
